The world has changed so much since LAP was last held in the summer of 2019. Over the last couple of years, NYSUT has taken the opportunity to reflect on our changing environment and realign LAP to the challenges our locals face. This overview will explore the what’s new as well as review the tenets of this 25-year-old program.

All Locals – Articulating Vision, Mission and Values

In this course, each local team will learn how to create and review your local’s value, mission, and vision statements. Once established, your mission, vision, and values will serve as a roadmap for accomplishing your goals and guide decision-making. Through the exercises in this session, you will explore and articulate your local's unique story. You'll forge your brand promise and create for yourselves an actionable set of brand guidelines that will be a framework for the rest of your work.

2nd Year Locals – Membership Recruitment and Retention

Once you have them, how do you keep them? This session will help you determine if your new member program is working and if not, what you can do to improve it. We’ll share best practices from other 2nd-year Locals and analyze current data collection to improve your 1:1 structure, retention of members and build capacity in your Local.

2nd Year Locals – Effective Leadership ID and Development

During this workshop, teams will reflect on their LAP program activities, examining whether their leadership structure was a help or a hindrance. Teams will also evaluate whether the activities and their LAP program have helped incorporate new leaders and identify potential leaders. Finally, teams will assess their current year’s LAP activities to create opportunities to integrate new leaders, as well as to promote and identify future leaders.

2nd Year Locals – Strategic Planning

Strategic planning helps design a road map for accomplishing organizational goals. In this session participants will analyze the strategic planning work they engaged in as a team since their initial strategic planning session and review how to use several strategic planning tools. LAP Teams will also have an opportunity to utilize these tools as they continue to fine-tune their projects.

2nd Year Locals – Community Engagement

Organizing best practices are effective tools that increase membership development and engagement, and can (and should) be applied to strategy and tactics in community engagement. But what does that look like and how does that work? The workshop for Year 1 locals helps distinguish the differences between community service vs. community engagement, how to effectively map your community, collect good and usable data, and ultimately what to do with it.

The second step in this workshop explores the nuances of building and utilizing power, building a theory of change, creating a power analysis, and using that to execute an effective winning issue campaign.

2nd Year Locals – Political Action Overview

Building off LAP Year 1, this workshop will help members dissect and understand the political landscape in their region. Locals will learn how to develop systems and structures from within to become more politically involved and effective in local, state, and national advocacy and electoral campaigns. We will review the process of setting up legislative and political action committees, endorsement processes, and Vote-Cope drive to prepare your local for future political and issues campaigns.

2nd Year Locals – School Board Race Overview

Building off of Lap Year 2, locals will learn strategies to build, maintain and leverage relationships with members of the Board of Education to the benefit of their members. Locals will learn best practices to increase participation in Board campaigns and how solidarity can help influence Board relationships.

Maintaining good communications with your membership requires creating and enacting a consistent plan. This course will discuss how to properly articulate your local's brand image and how to consistently use branding and communications best practices to reach your membership through the most effective channels. We will also review branding and design standards to help improve the quality and professionalism of your communications.

Plenary Session – Intro to Social Justice

Learn how to promote racial and social justice, increase cultural awareness, and create a more inclusive environment for your local, district, and community.

The goal is to bridge cultural divides and make our locals, schools, and communities more welcoming for people of all abilities and backgrounds, by helping participants see beyond their own personal world view.
